Natural Pest Control Tips – Earwigs

Pest Control Tips Ear WigsEarwig pest control starts with prevention. Seal cracks in windows, doors and screens to cut off their entryways. Make the outside of your home less cozy by removing wood and leaf piles and put up bird feeders to encourage birds who naturally keep the population down.

If earwigs have already set up a residence in your home you can create traps by filling a clean tuna can or any shallow, straight-sided container halfway with vegetable oil. Another trick is to dampen a newspaper with water, roll it up and place where the earwigs are hanging out. In both instances they will check in the trap but wont check out.

Natural Pest Control Tips – Spiders

Pest Control Tips SpiderI always have a hard time eh-hem “removing” spiders from my home since they are the ultimate in pest control. If you’d rather not share your home with them, a few of these all natural tips will help keep them away.

Spraying a citrus or peppermint essential oil in spider-prone areas will help keep them outside and away from your home. Some think placing chestnuts on windowsills and around exterior walls could also do the trick. Worth a try right? Keeping the inside of your home low on clutter and free of wood and cardboard accumulations will help make it less inviting to these creepy crawlers. Dusting regularly helps as well.

Natural Pest Control Tips – Flies

Pest Control Tips FliesFor pest control, use a few drops of citronella, pine, or eucalyptus essential oils in a small spray bottle with water or make sachets containing cloves, basil, and/or bay leaves. Spray or hang by windows and doorways. Some swear you can keep flies away by filling a ziplock bag halfway with water, adding 4 pennies and hanging by the doorway. It is believed that the reflection might scare the flies off. In addition, always cover trash cans with tight-fitting lids and don’t let items like fruit decompose in or around the home.

If the flies have already entered and are bugging you, make an all natural fly paper by combining  1/4 cup corn syrup, 1 tbsp white sugar and 1 tbsp brown sugar. Soak strips of brown paper bags in mixture, take out and allow to dry overnight. Hang where the flies are hanging and dispose of when they take the bait.

Natural Pest Control Tips – Moths

Pests Control Tips MothsKeep Moths away using these Non-Toxic Pest Control Tips

Moths are a very common pest that we all deal with at one time or another. Prevention is key when dealing with them and since they love warm, dark places like the nooks and crannies of your home it is important to keep those areas clean. A chemical free cleaning that includes vacuuming along baseboards, heating vents and carpets can help prevent an outbreak.

Keep these pests from damaging your clothing by filling cheesecloth squares with cedar chips and placing in drawers and storage containers. You can also create your own moth-repelling sachets using any of the following: whole bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, cloves, eucalyptus leaves, lavender, peppercorns or dried lemon peels. Simply toss into drawers or hang in the closet.

Natural Pest Control Tips – Ants

Every year it happens like clockwork. The weather becomes warmer, the days become longer and those outdoor pests seem to start making their yearly appearance in our homes.

When you see that first pest, before your grab one those cans of toxic chemicals or decide to move, consider this. As a green cleaning company we know it is always best to try chemical free options first before resorting to the toxic alternatives. Best of all, most these all natural pest control tips include items straight from your pantry!

Pest Control Tips ANTS

Pest Control for Ants

Store food in tightly closed containers, vacuum crumbs and avoid leaving pet food out longer than necessary. Spray entry points with straight vinegar or use citrus or peppermint oil mixed with water in a small spray bottle. Sprinkle cinnamon, cayenne pepper, dried chili pepper, dried coffee grounds, paprika or place whole bay leaves at entry points in your home. These work great in areas where food is kept e.g. your kitchen cabinets.  Another option is to add citrus, peppermint or vinegar to cotton balls and place in ant prone areas.

If the ant invasion has already begun try this non-toxic tip. Make a mixture of grated bar soap and water. Add to a spray bottle and spray directly on pests. The soap breaks down the insect’s waxy exoskeleton, allowing the water to drown it. Much better than those toxic chemicals in bug spray!

You can also use Food-grade Diatomaceous Eartha chalky powder that is the natural fossilized remains of diatoms (a type of hard-shelled algae). The diatom particles are small and sharp, but at their microscopic size they are only harmful to the exoskeletons of small insects. Food-grade diatomaceous earth is so safe you can sprinkle it throughout your house and/or around your vegetable patch. To use, sprinkle a thin layer indoors or outdoors where insects are found. Leave for two days or however long you need to control pests and then clean up and reapply as needed. Also called ‘Insect Dust,’ this product is a registered insecticide with the government.
